An Invitation

Despite serious communication problems, you succeeded in hiring a shikara, or water taxi for the day in order to explore Srinigar. You ask the boatman to take you as close as possible to the Hari Parbat Fort, and the nearby Jama Masjid mosque. The hike to the top of the hill in order to visit the fort is rewarded by a picturesque view over the town and the lake.

As you regain the streets of the city you notice that they seem unusually crowded, and become even more so as you wander towards the mosque. There is much shouting, and some pushing, and as it intensifies you seek refuge in an ancient doorway, next to a man who smiles warmly. "It is independence day, today," he explains, "this is the celebration." You ask him if he could direct you to a nearby restaurant to eat and wait until the celebration calms slightly. He smiles again and explains that there are likely very few restaurants open, and then he insists that you come to his home to eat.

He first leads you back to the canal by a quiet route and then explains to the waiting boatman that you will be delayed. At his home you enjoy an excellent meal and warm conversation with the entire family. The time slips by, and when you finally head back to the canal the sun is setting and the crowd has subsided. A boat pulls up next to yours and while one person paddles, the other explains to you that he sells handicrafts and, if you are interested, he would be happy to show them to you as you return to your houseboat.
